Oqton's Geomagic Freeform Sales Video: Case Study
2025-01-17
10:49:27 Background to the Video Production Brief
Promotional videos for software can be hard to get right. Animated explainers are often the first solution that springs to mind so it was a refreshing brief from Oqton requesting something different. They wanted a strong visual narrative, essential for capturing attention, explaining complex ideas and driving customer engagement. This case study explores the live-action sales video we produced for Oqton, specifically for their product Geomagic Freeform, a powerful piece of 3D design software. Our goal was to create a software video that not only raised awareness of the product but also engaged potential customers through a fun and memorable narrative. This video production was the first in a series of three, each designed to highlight the versatility and capabilities of Geomagic Freeform while establishing the product as the “best-kept secret” in the 3D design world. This first film involves our protagonist breaking into a competitor’s office at night to find out the secret to their success. Films 2 and 3 continued the comedy narrative.
The Challenge
As a complex, intangible product, Geomagic Freeform is difficult to represent directly through traditional promotional video formats. Software products are often abstract, and consumers can find it hard to understand how they work without a more relatable or tangible explanation. Our solution was to use a live-action video approach, which allowed us to showcase the real-world applications and possibilities of Geomagic Freeform in a way that felt relatable, creative and memorable. Oqton wanted the viewer to come away from the films understanding the feeling that comes from using a game-changing software application.
The Approach
Our approach was to develop a live-action explainer video that would use engaging storytelling to illustrate the power of the software in real-world contexts. Live-action videos offer a more visceral, engaging experience than animated ones, which are often too abstract for a product like Geomagic Freeform. By using real actors and carefully crafted scenarios, we could bring the product’s features to life and make the software more relatable and tangible for potential customers. The fun and creative direction of the video would help to demystify the software while maintaining its credibility and position as an essential tool for leading global brands & industries creating products like toys, industrial design and medical prosthetics.
Collaboration with Oqton
We began the project by working closely with the team at Oqton to understand the product in-depth and identify the key messages that needed to be conveyed. The initial step involved researching other software promotional videos that Oqton liked and thought could inspire the direction of the campaign. From this research, we brainstormed multiple creative ideas for the video production and presented them to Oqton.
After several rounds of pitching and collaboration, we arrived at a concept that combined humour, creativity and education. The video would have a lighthearted, entertaining tone, but at its core, it would communicate the software’s robust features and capabilities.
Once the concept was approved, we moved to the next stage of video production, which included scripting and casting.

Casting the Right Talent
One of the most interesting challenges in this project was casting the right actors. For the video, we needed performers who could convincingly portray both the technical aspects of 3D design and the lighthearted, fun tone we were aiming for. Additionally, since Oqton is a global company with a primarily American audience, we needed to find actors who could convincingly pull off American accents.
Using Mandy.com for casting, we secured a diverse and talented cast. While we initially aimed for American actors, we ended up casting a mix of two Americans and one Australian actor to match the character profiles we needed for the video. Casting actors with strong accents who could embody the right energy and enthusiasm for the video was key to making the concept successful. The casting process was intensive, but ultimately, we assembled a team that was both talented and perfect for the project.
Location Scouting and Filming
After casting, we turned our attention to the filming locations. Since the project required various environments, including an industrial setting, an office space and a high-tech design studio, finding the perfect locations was critical to making the video feel authentic. As the video production was based in Birmingham, after multiple recces around the local area, we identified the ideal spaces that would fit the tone and aesthetic we were looking for.
The shoot took place over two days in Birmingham, where we worked with a tight-knit crew led by Dan Hunt, a skilled cinematographer who helped bring our vision to life. Dan’s technical expertise and creativity were essential in making the footage look dynamic and cinematic, ensuring that every frame contributed to the overall energy of the video.

Video Production and Post-Production
The video production process was a well-coordinated effort between the creative team, actors and technical crew. With multiple setups and a fast-paced shooting schedule, we managed to keep the production on track while maintaining the high standards that Oqton expected.
The post-production process was where everything truly came together. Our editors worked closely with the creative team to refine the footage, ensuring that the pacing, tone and narrative were aligned with the original concept. Adding visual effects and sound design helped emphasise the unique features of Geomagic Freeform, such as its intuitive interface, versatility and applications across different industries.
The final result was a fun and engaging explainer video that effectively communicated the software’s capabilities while entertaining the audience. The video successfully captured the essence of Geomagic Freeform—a powerful yet user-friendly tool that enables designers to push the boundaries of innovation.
The Impact
After the video production was completed, it was shared across Oqton’s digital channels, including their website and social media. Given that this was the first video in a series of three, it set the tone for the upcoming content and helped build anticipation for the next instalments.
As of the latest update, the video has received substantial engagement on YouTube, attracting views from industry professionals, potential customers, and curious viewers alike. The positive reception of the video demonstrated that our approach had struck the right chord and it validated our strategy of using live-action video production to showcase the software in a more tangible and human way.
